The signals from the finance sector continue to pile up – check out the stories in the Finance & Sentiment section.

The biggest policy decision has to be the Biden Administration barring imports of solar panels linked to forced labor in China’s Xinjiang region.

Toyota remains the hold-out on going all electric, while Honda announced plans to phase out gas powered vehicles by 2040. Check out Transportation.

More companies are turning to power purchase agreements (PPAs) for wind and solar to meet their climate aspirations, with Amazon and BASF figuring prominently here this week – see Solar & Wind.

UN to align $85bn pension pots with net-zero; sets precedent for others | edie
This week, the UN’s Joint Staff Pension Fund (UNJSPF) set new targets to reduce investment-induced emissions by 29% on a year-on-year basis for 2021. Through to 2025, it is targeting a reduction of 40%, also against a 2020 baseline. The Fund has already divested from coal but will now look at what combination of other engagement and divestment is needed across other “priority sectors”, namely oil and gas, utilities, steel, cement and transport. It claims its new targets are aligned with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5C trajectory.

Given that the UNJSPF represents the pensions of more than 130,000 individuals, covering £61.5bn, Make My Money Matter believes that the move will press other schemes to follow suit.

Ikea and Rockefeller foundations pledge $US1bn for “reliable, renewable” energy access | RenewEconomy 
The IKEA Foundation and The Rockefeller Foundation announced on Monday plans to create a $US1 billion initiative to designed to bring renewable energy to over three billion people without electricity or with unreliable electricity, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 1 billion tonnes.

“Minister Ley last week found that a revised proposal, involving expansion through the Eighty-mile Beach RAMSAR site and an ammonia plant, was ‘Clearly Unacceptable’ in accordance with the EPBC Act,” the spokesperson said. “The proponent can resubmit a revised proposal.” The original approved proposal for the Asian Renewable Energy Hub that can provide 9GW of wind and solar renewable energy (approved in December 2020) remains in place.

The United Kingdom’s first grid-scale battery storage system connected directly to the country’s transmission network was activated on Wednesday, a 50MW lithium-ion battery that is part of the £41 million GBP Energy Superhub Oxford project.

Plans unveiled for Netherlands largest battery | pv magazine
The 24 MW/48 MWh system is being built by Dutch storage system provider Giga Storage and utility Eneco. The battery will be used by Eneco for forecasting supply-demand errors on the intraday trading market.
